Soon after I first started Ohio-Nature.com a lot of site visitors sent emails asking who the creator is (the creator of the website that is). That was before I posted this “about me” page. Although I prefer to keep a low profile, here is a little bit about me and Northwest Ohio Nature.
My name is Jon Cross and I am a native of northwest Ohio. I have always loved nature and the outdoors since I was a kid. Some of my best memories from childhood are tromping through the sandy fields and grass prairies, getting wet feet in the swampy areas, and exploring in the woods.
I still enjoy doing those things, but try to keep my feet dry these days.
As our own children have grown up, my wife and I have tried to foster an appreciation for nature and history in them, although I think they see my interest in nature as a bit eccentric from time to time. This was further reinforced when my habitat restoration project began on our 8 acre lot.
Northwest Ohio is home to more rare plant species that anywhere else in Ohio. This is mainly because of the existence of the globally rare Oak Openings Region. I have lived here all my life and never knew that fact until a couple years ago. Its funny how you never think of your own home area as being special.
My mission for Ohio-Nature.com is to provide visitors a place to learn about nature in Northwest Ohio and why it is so special. With only a few noted exceptions, all of the photographs on this site are my own work. Nature photography is a passion of mine. Photography along with a love of nature is a nice combination for a web site like this
I created Ohio-Nature.com to share my love of northwest Ohio and nature with the community at large. I hope that all of you who visit take away a renewed appreciation for the natural world around you, whether you live in my corner of the world or somewhere else.
