Junco

The junco is a common bird seen around winter bird feeders in Ohio.

Male Junco
The male is much darker in color

Actually this little bird is only seen in Ohio during the winter.  It nests in much more northerly places in the summer.  They typically arrive here in the late fall when the weather begins getting cold.  It heads back north in the spring.

You know that winter is here to stay when these birds arrive.  The same holds true for spring.  When these birds are gone warm weather is here to stay.

The male is darker in color than the female.  He is pretty much dark all over with the exception of the light undersides.  The female is very similar but a little lighter in color with more browns in the feathers.  Both have pinkish colored beaks.

They like most bird seed mixes so are easily attracted to feeders.  They mostly like to feed from the ground.

They also like small pine trees and shrubbery.  Brush piles are particularly attractive to them.
