Nature Photography

Nature photography is a perfect fit for those who love nature and share an interest in preserving it. This doesn’t necessarily mean preserving the pictures of nature. It means that creating images of our natural surroundings helps to increase awareness of things that some people don’t always take the time to appreciate.

Many of the national parks in this country were created as a result of the pictures taken of the land and wildlife there. Public awareness of the beauty of nature helps to create interest in protecting it. Nature photography helps to create public awareness of nature.

Nature Photography in Northwest Ohio

Northwest Ohio has a great deal to offer nature photographers. For starters, the only facility in the United States devoted entirely to nature photography is located here in Northwest Ohio. If you have any interest at all in nature and/or photography you should spend some time at The National Center for Nature Photography.  It is located in Secor Metropark and is open on the weekends from noon to 5:00 pm (also some holidays and special occasions).

The Best Nature Photography Places in Northwest Ohio

There are many excellent spots in Northwest Ohio for nature photographers. One of the many advantages of shooting images here is the variety of landscapes. The places listed below offer photographic opportunities unlike any other in the state of Ohio and the Midwest.

The Maumee River cuts right through Northwest Ohio. Great shots can be taken at any time of the year along the river. There are many parks with access to the river. Wildlife is abundant year-round.

The Oak Openings Region is a lot of things to many nature lovers. Photography is not an exception. Home to more rare plants than any other place in Ohio, Oak Openings will keep a photographer busy for a very long time.

During the spring and summer there are new things blooming every week.  Spring is a perfect time to get great bird pictures as hundred of different bird species migrate through the Oak Opening Region.

Another fantastic place for nature photography is along the shores of Lake Erie. Crane Creek national Wildlife Refuge, Metzger Marsh, and Magee Marsh offer some of the best bird watching and photography in North America. April and May are peak months for migrating birds in Ohio. They stop on the southern shore of Lake Erie before making the long trek across Lake Erie to Canada. These parks are priceless for nature photographers looking to get images of hundreds of different birds.

Nature Photography Equipment

Nature photography started as something that seemed fun to try. Now it is a passion of mine. I have tried a few different lenses and various other pieces of equipment. Here are some of my observations on the camera equipment I have used.
