Yes, pileated woopeckers are in Ohio

Hi Eric,

Yes, there are pileated woodpeckers in Ohio.

Actually the pileated looks very much like the ivory-billed woodpecker. The ivory billed woodpecker has been thought to be extinct, but sightings have been reported in Arkansas over the past few years.

Pileated woodpeckers can be pretty shy sometimes which make them hard to photograph.

I was fortunate enough to have one cooperate with me recently. The picture below was taken in January. Supposedly it is the only picture of a pileated taken here in NW Ohio.

They have been sighted for a few years now, but very difficult to photograph.
