Summer Azure Butterfly

(Celastrina neglecta)

Summer Azure Butterfly
The Summer Azure Butterfly

This little blue butterfly can be found in Northwest Ohio from late May until late July, and in September.  It is very common in Ohio.

It can be found in all 88 counties of Ohio.  It's habitat includes roads and trails through the woods, woodland edges, and gardens.

The summer azure is usually larger than the spring azure with brilliant blue dorsal wing surfaces.  Both summer azure and spring azure like mud puddles.

They can be found gathering on muddy roads, trails, and stream banks.  Spring and fall broods are larger than the summer brood.

The larvae feed on dogwoods, wild cherry, and wingstem.

This butterfly shouldn't be confused with the Karner Blue
